Hello again, and welcome back to Travel Hints for Women Over 60!
Today, let’s chat about culture and research—two things that can turn a good trip into a truly memorable one.
🌍 Why Bother with Culture & History?

When you visit a new country, it’s worth knowing at least a little of its history and traditions.
Take Europe and the UK, for example. Every city, every town, every cobblestone seems to whisper a story: the Holy Roman Empire, the Ottomans, World War I and II, the Cold War. These aren’t just textbook topics—they shape the buildings you see, the food you eat, and the festivals you stumble across.
On a recent trip to Eastern Europe, our guide kept referring to the Ottomans. I realised I must have missed that lesson at school! When I got home, I found a great Netflix series called Rise of Empires: Ottoman. It brought the whole period to life—and it’s already helping me plan my next adventure to Istanbul, the very heart of the old Ottoman Empire.
📚 Easy Ways to “Do Your Homework”
You don’t need to become a historian. A little light research makes a huge difference. Try:
A quick browse on Wikipedia
A well-chosen historical novel
A binge of a good period drama or docuseries
Suddenly, when a guide mentions “this castle dates back to the reign of James II,” it actually means something.
🤝 Customs & Etiquette
Culture isn’t just about battles and monarchs. It’s also about the little everyday things:
Tipping expectations 💰
Dress codes for religious sites 🕌
How locals greet one another 🤗
These small details show respect and can open doors to warmer, friendlier interactions.
🗣 A Few Words Go a Long Way
You don’t need to be fluent in the local language, but learning a few basics—hello, good morning, please, thank you—goes a very long way. Locals notice and appreciate the effort.
One of my favourite tools is Duolingo. You can pick up simple phrases in almost any language while having fun with it. (I’ve linked it on my website for you to try out.)
✨ Wrap-Up
So, whether it’s brushing up on history, learning a few key phrases, or understanding local customs, a little research adds a lot of richness to your travels.
